The study explore how to strenghten the onshore drilling organisation's ability to make sense of the ongoing operations, and to adapt and cope with contingencies to avoid major accidents. The contribution of the onshore community in drilling operations is believed to be an increasingly important contribution in the integrated operations of the future. Based on fieldwork in rig-teams in an onshore operations centre, a (non-exhaustive) set of formalised and non-formalised strategies to maintain well integrity during drilling operations is described. The strategies are conceptualise along three axes of sensemaking – a functional axis, a cognitive axis and an organisational axis. The analysis shows the intertwinedness of prescriptions of work and contextual, situated work practices, and how the sensemaking processes – and the course of action as such – constantly enact both these. Barriers and formalised work processes – or work as imagined – seem to be central to this conceptualisation. Extending the reservoir of theories, models and metaphors illustrating the pragmatic nature of normal work and its sometimes non-intuitive effects may be one way of strengthening the onshore sensemaking process.
