Abstract

This paper presents a method for developing indicators intended for on-line monitoring of process related risk on offshore production installations. The method is derived from a major research project where the main objective was to develop and apply integrated operation (IO) concepts to prevent major accidents. The technically based quantitative risk analysis (QRA) is not a sufficient basis for developing proactive indicators. Information from the installation specific barrier analyses, studies of hydrocarbon leaks and interviews with operational personnel were therefore included to get a broader view of the risk picture. This co mbined information resulted in a set of indicators for which a weighing and scoring system was prepared in order to enable an overall "process risk indicator". As a whole, the suggested indicator approach facilitates improved recognition, assessment and visualization of operational risk factors, including status of important safety barriers in operation.
