Managing Human Factors (HF) in the design of Control Centers (CCs) has become increasingly important in petroleum projects, because of its potential impact on safety and efficient operations. Integrated Operations (IO) introduce new ways of working which raise new risk management issues. During the period 2006–2008 we performed in-depth interviews and workshops to evaluate ISO 11064 “Ergonomic design of control centres”.We observed positive contributions from the interdisciplinary approach and to structuring and legitimating the HF work. We also observed a potential for improvement of ISO 11064 in the scope of the standard, organizational issues, work procedures, competence in design and operations, exception handling in a virtual organization, communication to the engineering team and documentation of results. Thus, we suggest adapting a more goal-based approach in the standard and a more balanced Human-Technology-Organization (HTO) standard for the entire system life cycle when designing and managing HF in modern CCs.
