About the IO Center

The Center for Integrated Operations in the Petroleum Industry  (IO Center) is a research-based innovation center, established with support from the Research Council of Norway and sponsorship from major international oil companies and suppliers and 3 research institutions. NTNU/Department of Petroleum Technology and Applied Geophysics is the host institution of the IO Center.

It’s mission is to develop new methods and tools for Integrated operations, which can be embedded in improved work processes in the oil companies and enhanced products and services from the suppliers. The center is an 8 year collaboration program, starting in 2006. The research is carried out in close cooperation between the industry and the researsch institutions. The solutions developed by the center are verified through pilot projects in the industry.

All partners have a non-exclusive right to use project results in their own line of business.


Current projects





  • Education of 25 PhD candidates (over 8 years) and 35 Master candidates per year.
  • New knowledge, methods and tools are transferred to the industry partners through pilot projects, workshops, training courses and spin-off commercialization projects.
  • An international network has been built up between industry and top range universities/research institutions.
  • The annual IO Conference in Trondheim, arranged by the IO Center in September every year attracts  300 participants.
