Description:
The Department of Human Systems Integration Research has been working in partnership with the IO Center to understand the collaboration aspects of Integrated Operations with a focus on leadership, complex systems, distributed teams-of-teams, and cultural diversity. DHSIR is part of the Institute for Simulation and Training at the University of Central Florida (www.ist.ucf.edu). Our expertise lies within maximizing individual and team performance in complex environments through a team-centered approach to training, learning, and assessment. We seek to provide scientifically-grounded, practical guidelines, tips, and measurement tools regarding how to enhance and build adaptive capacity and resilience in teams performing in such complex environments as the military, healthcare, emergency management, oil industry, and space. In this vein, we are currently doing work in the areas of: distributed teams, team leadership, multicultural teams, team cohesion, teams-of-team, team cognition, stress, and team adaptation. Current and past sponsors include: NASA, National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Army Research Organization, Army Research Laboratory, Army Research Institute, Air Force Research Laboratory, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and Society for Human Resource Management. A few exemplar projects include: (1) identifying and mitigating challenges in maintaining team cohesion in long duration, space flight, (2) investigating the impact of distribution and virtuality on collaborative/distributed leadership, process, and performance, (3) investigating the impact of culture on collaboration in high-stake environments, and (4) improving the effectiveness of obstetric teams and forward surgical teams through collaboration.
