This report describes the main work and results by “The Future of Telemedicine in O&G” from January 2012 – June 2014. The main results are the concept of a “Virtual Examination Room - On the go” as well as the development and demonstrations of a telemedicine prototype that enables the key features of the “Virtual Examination Room - On the go”. The project has been developed as a user driven innovation process and a tri-part collaboration “case study” between St. Olavs Hospital, ConocoPhillips and IBM together with the IO Center. The general and specific requirements of the telemedicine prototype and demonstrator are defined together with the main users – nurses at the offshore platform and medical experts at the hospital.

Summary

This report describes the main work and results by “The Future of Telemedicine in O&G” from January 2012 – June 2014. The main results are the concept of a “Virtual Examination Room - On the go” as well as the development and demonstrations of a telemedicine prototype that enables the key features of the “Virtual Examination Room - On the go”.

The project has been developed as a user driven innovation process and a tri-part collaboration “case study” between St. Olavs Hospital, ConocoPhillips and IBM together with the IO Center. The general and specific requirements of the telemedicine prototype and demonstrator are defined together with the main users – nurses at the offshore platform and medical experts at the hospital.

The “Virtual Examination Room –On the go” is a collaboration space where all medical data can be accessed and the decision making process may unfold in real time. The virtual Examination Room can be accessed by Video/PC/Tablet/Smart Phone “on the go”. This “On the go” solution is characterized by the ability to allow all involved roles in the decision making process to be synchronized and interact anywhere within minutes.

The “Virtual Examination Room – On the go” is a concept for optimizing work and decision making processes in telemedicine to assure reduced response times and better quality assurance of the medical decisions. The key components by the medical approach are really the understanding of the work- and decision making processes in medicine along with future perspectives on decision support by telemedicine.

The core of the telemedicine prototype is a process engine facilitating the integrations and display of data (text, images, video and sound) and orchestrate resources according to the requested practice(s). It enables the capturing and sharing of medical data and the flexible collaboration between the different roles in the decision making process. It is important to highlight that the telemedicine prototype is not developing new technology. The project focuses on using robust technology but make innovation by new applications that support new workflows ensuring faster and better medical decisions

The key features and capabilities demonstrated are the sharing of medical data and the flexibility to adapt to different situations and patients, and future needs, as well as transparency and traceability with the decision making process. The demonstrator of the “Virtual Examination Room –On the go” shows reduced response times and better quality assurance of the medical decision making processes compared to current practice.

The project vision is to improve the healthcare services at offshore installations. It is our belief that the healthcare services at offshore installations will make a quantum leap by implementing a future telemedicine practice based upon the “Virtual Examination Room – On the go”.

Vision

The vision is to improve the healthcare services at offshore installations.

Goal & scope

The goal is to improve the offshore healthcare services by a decision support system for faster and better quality assured medical decisions that support an optimal workflow and collaboration, between medics onshore and offshore.

The medical experts want to access the key medical data “on the go” and operate a video link “on the go”.  If they have the right medical data they can make good quality decisions within 2-5 minutes.

The purpose is to make better and faster medical decisions based on high quality medical information:

  • Assure the decisions processes for improved health care
  • Improve the work processes and collaboration between onshore and offshore
  • How can technology support the optimal decision support system
  • How can technology remove the distance between the patient offshore and the specialist doctor onshore
