Condition monitoring of offshore oil and gas equipment is important as it enables early detection of developing failure conditions.Three-phase separators constitute an important type of equipment related to O&G processing. Problem conditions that can occur inside the separator vessel and impacxt separation efficiency involve presence of scale, sand and other particles, emulsions, damaged/loose internal components, foreign objects, gas carry-under, etc. Acoustic monitoring has been used to detect changes in vibration signature in two error conditions: 1)Clogging of the baffle plate. 2)Cyclone loosely attached or removed. Efficient signal processing showed that distinct differences could be found. This report describes an expansion of the sensor concept by introducing passive markers inside the separator, as an extra "booster" for error dection. The markers are designed to vibrate as a result of the local fluid flow, in the present work focusing on gas flowing up from an inlet cyclone. The device produces sound if this flow is normal, and no sound if the flow is absent due to some cyclone error condition.The tests showed that the principle works, but more detailed design is necessary for the concept to work more satisfactory in a real separator.
