The work with this report has been performed within the Center for Integrated Operations in the Petroleum Industry (IO Center). The first part of report focuses on challenges and potentials related to maintenance and Condition Monitoring (CM) of static equipment, and in particular for heat exchangers (HXs). This part of the report has been a collaborative effort between IO Center Project 3.2 (Condition Monitoring of Oil and Gas Facilities) and IO Center Project 4.2 (Work Processes and Decision Making). Challenges and potentials related to human, technological and organisational factors have been revealed. The second part of the report focuses on a few of the identified technological challenges and potentials, in terms of 1) inconsistent terminology for maintenance and CM, 2) insufficient knowledge of degradation mechanisms and root causes, and 3) the need to provide management with clear ideas where CM can provide early gain, demonstrate that inherent risks can be managed and that business benefits can be realised as results of CM. Related to the third point, the report is summarising a procedure for activities that should be performed during the design phase of HX in order to select cost optimum CM strategies. The approach can also be used for HXs in the operations phase.
