Transferring the IO principles to the planning domain has led to the development of the concept of Integrated Planning (IPL). The concept represents a holistic perspective on planning, emphasizing the interplay between planning horizons, between organizational units, and among cross-organizational partners. Defined as holistic, cross-domain planning enabling optimal resource allocation and activity prioritization for safe and efficient production (MARINTEK, 2012), the concept IPL as we know it today is mainly developed in the IO Center in close collaboration with industry partners.

This work has confirmed that information sharing and cooperation across disciplines/ organizations represent significant challenges related to planning. It has showed that current work processes in planning does not support integrated planning, neither does the organizational structure or the performance management systems (including the KPIs). Consequently, there is a need for better coordination between activities as well as identification of dependencies across discipline and organizations. Moreover, there is a clear need to develop tools that can help the industry to develop the existing planning processes into a more integrated practice. What more, we have not seen the use of models that contribute significantly to the decision making in overall planning.

Main efforts of the work carried out has therefore been focused upon answering the following questions:

Processes and roles:

  • How can industry implement a best practice for IPL based on work process design?
  • What characterize the "IPL domain", which roles and actors are involved, and how can decision making across roles and actors be facilitated?
  • How can KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) support implementation of IPL and which indicators are crucial at different planning levels?

Optimization tools:

  • How can new conceptual solutions for optimizing tools support IPL? (E.g. optimization of logistics operations,

Arenas for plan coordination:

  • What types of arenas are necessary for efficient plan coordination and what are significant requirements for designing and implementation of the arenas?
  • How can industry facilitate collaboration, teamwork and committed participation on the arenas?

Statoil has been one of the participating industry partners for the Integrated Planning and Logistics project since 2008. It has been a fruitful collaboration and much of the insight gained in this collaboration has been important in developing the tools and methods in this project. The business case has covered fields like; Operational planning in Statoil, The use of work surfaces in plan meetings, Analyses of the logistical planning in Statoil, Optimization of resources, Collaboration with University of California Berkeley

Petrobras has been one of the main participating industry partners for the Integrated Planning and Logistics topic project since 2010. It has been a fruitful collaboration and much of the insight gained in this collaboration has been important in developing the tools and methods in this project. The IO Centre has been warmly welcomed to Brazil to see how the operations have been performed within Petrobras. This has helped our team to understand the IPL challenges, enablers and the human and cultural capabilities for cultivating IPL ( 4C Culture). In addition we have aimed to identify the best IPL -practices within Petrobras as a basis for further studies for comparable with other relevant business cases.

A paper presents an approach to analyze logistical planning based on situation; stable and unstable conditions. The theoretical frame is the Integrated Planning (IPL) Model that has been developed in earlier MARINTE research on IPL. This paper concentrates on the logistical planning and the concepts lean and agile are used to give directions as to what aspects are important during logistical planning and event handling. The findings are systemized according to the Enabling and Core Capabilities defined by the IPL Model. Having an agile approach to event handling emphasizes building relations and network of actors that can contribute on short notice before the events occur. It is also identified a need for more research in this area in terms of defining events and gathering more experience in the field.

Introduction to Integrated Planning - A Handbook to IPL.

The handbook provide an introduction to the concept of Integrated Planning (IPL) and the purpose of the handbook is to: - Provide a guide to central aspects for introducing and improving integrated planning in your organization - Present key organizational capabilities for IPL - Introduce useful guiding questions for assessing IPL readiness and target areas for improvement - Achieve increased awareness of the function and role of planning, including its effects on HSE, cost control and resource optimization
