The IO Center in cooperation with Petrobras organized a workshop on “The future of telemedicine in O&G” 10-12 December 2013 in Rio de Janeiro at the Petrobras University and in Sao Paulo at Albert Einstein Hospital. Dr. Armando José Marques Pimenta and Thiago Lopes da Rosa coordinated the workshop together with Arild N. Nystad from the IO Center.
Content

The objective of the project is to understand and demonstrate how to improve offshore healthcare by facilitating faster and better medical decisions. The objective of the workshop was to review the status in the Telemedicine project with emphasis on the fundamentals with focus on capabilities and resilience and how to implement Telemedicine on a complex offshore situation.

We discussed how current and future practices of telemedicine can give us an understanding of potentials for developing telemedicine in oil and gas. The capabilities approach has proven useful for understanding how employing such new technological solutions may call for a system change in order to be effective. A required change to people, process and/or governance aspects of the organization was highlighted and discussed in order to avoid any impediments to implementation. By exploring the different contexts for using telemedicine (Norway and Brazil), the project and the workshop highlighted how this may give rise to different needs and configurations for a new telemedicine system

Jan Gunnar Skogås from St. Olavs Hospital gave an excellent review of the future requirements and options in telemedicine from his experience as manager of the Operation Room of the Future at St. Olavs Hospital. We continued the workshop at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo with Dr. Eliezer Silva as our host. They are in the process to make significant investments in telemedicine and we had a very exciting discussions and review of the facilities at Albert Einstein Hospital.       

The IO Center team was Jan Gunnar Skogås (St. Olavs Hospital), Ketil Thorvik (St. Olavs Hospital), Alexandra Fernandes (IFE), John Eidar Simensen (IFE), Kine Reegård (IFE), Tor Erik Evjemo (SINTEF) and Arild N. Nystad (IO Center/NTNU) as coordinator together with Dr. Armando and Thiago.
